Sarah wears a few hats! She is the founder of Island Doula, a prenatal eductor and a counsellor.
Birth doula: Sarah has been supporting families for many years as they welcome their babies. She is passionate about birth and supporting families by preparing, educating, and empowering them to accomplish their birth goals. She is humbled when families choose to her to support them through their journey.
Prenatal Educator: Sarah teaches both group and privavte prenatal classes with Journey of Birth in Nanaimo. These classes aim to inform, inspire and help you build confidence to welcome your baby.
Counsellor: Sarah works as a counsellor on Gabriola, Nanaimo and also online. In her private practice she sees both couples and individuals. Her approach is informed by: Attachment theory, family systems therapy, art therapy, the person centred approach and our current understanding of neuroscience.
In her life outside of work she is a mother to two children, spends as much time on the beach as possible looking at seaweed and tries to go hiking whenever she can.
Kathryn began her doula work in the mid 1980’s in Edmonton. She completed the Dona Certified labour and birth doula training at Douglas College as well as has studied child birth education with Penny
Simkin and Kathy Lindstrom. She did further studies in Hyderabad, India with midwife Vijaya Krishnan.
In 2017, Kathryn began the study of Ayurvedic medicine through Kerala Ayurveda Academy. She is an Ayurvedic Wellness Counsellor, a breath coach and a certified Watsu practitioner.
As a mother of three adult children and grandmother to six grandchildren, Kathryn prioritizes health and healing. She is pleased to have been the doula for many families in Alberta and BC, but most proud of having the opportunity to doula for the birth of all six grandchildren.
